人文的英雄主义

这是一个每年令人期待的时刻。自2013年起,《世界建筑》每年以一部专辑的篇幅报道一位文革以后的中国当代建筑师,希望以这种带有历史研究色彩的方式让更多的人了解中国当代建筑师的思想与作品,对这一群体以及他们所造就的中国当代建筑有更为清晰的认识。本期,我们将聚焦于中国工程院院士孟建民。

根据我国目前一直使用的对于建筑师的分类(虽然这种分类本身也正在受到质疑),孟建民无疑是“体制内建筑师”,面对着“体制内建筑师”们所必须面对的共同挑战。同时,孟建民的发展路径中也有着很独特的部分。如果说从未泯灭的英雄主义是这一代建筑师、特别其中经常面对大型公共建筑的建筑师的共性的话,孟建民因为他特殊的企业管理经历,又为这种英雄主义增添了一层面向复杂人性的人文主义色彩。

孟建民于1978年春就读于东南大学,是“文化大革命”结束后的第一批建筑专业学生,师从齐康院士取得博士学位后,应学校的召唤到深圳特区发展,他在1990年代先是创办东南大学建筑设计院深圳分院,后又通过竞聘担任了深圳市设计总院的院长,进行了无异于当下我们常说的“创业”工作。可以想象的是,在当时的历史环境下,“创业”的难度要远大于今天。在这种长时间的管理过程中,孟建民获得了超越建筑师思维定式的营养,为他深刻理解人性与社会的复杂,形成以人(特别是普通人)为本的价值取向奠定了基础。这一价值取向在他创作的大量医疗建筑和文教建筑中得到了充分的体现。面对的是截然不同的空间需求,特别极端复杂的工艺流程,孟建民以游刃有余的设计梳理基本,以兼具西方与东方现代建筑的意蕴增添情怀,使这些建筑在实际使用中得到了广泛的认同。

孟建民是东南大学的高才学生,自然也延续了可追溯至东南大学老一代建筑师们的坚韧与细腻,具备以取向永恒的方法表现建筑的宁静与质朴的功力。这显然是伴随着建筑历史而一直存在的英雄主义线索。在他创作的各个时期,孟建民都有重要的纪念性建筑作品问世。其所倡导的“简形”设计方法,使他即使是在体量不大的纪念建筑中,仍然能够实现对场所与环境有着极强的控制。我们经常会感慨在今天的建筑中尺度、比例等经典设计关注的缺席,但在孟建民的建筑中,它们不仅明确地存在,而且是令人信服地存在。

孟建民所提出的“人文、健康、高效”的“本原设计”思想是其对自己30余年建筑生涯的总结。在孟建民的建筑中,人文主义与英雄主义的交织显然是回到建筑本原的一种途径。

This is the much expected time of the year. Since 2013, World Architecture makes a special issue every year focusing on one post-culture-revolution Chinese architect. The purpose of such a practice is to carry out a historical investigation, getting closer to the true path of contemporary Chinese architecture. A deep understanding of this group of architects is in itself a revelation. Today, we focus on MENG Jianmin.

Based on the cliché classifcation of Chinese architects,MENG belongs to the institutionalised group, facing all the common challenges shared by people in this group. Yet MENG Jianmin has something unique in his career path. If heroism never dies in his age group of architects, MENG overlaps this heroism with a layer of humanism in his approach, very much owing to the management experience he has in his career.

Being the first batch of graduate student in postculture-revolution China, MENG went to Shenzhen to set up the Design Institute Branch of South East University(SEU),before winning the candidacy for the Chairman of Shenzhen Design Institute. There is unmistakable entrepreneurship in MENG, though realising the potential back then was way harder than it is today. MENG took all the challenges and led out more-than-a-decade of successful management. It is from this that MENG gained a vision that is much broader than, sometime simply contradictive to that of an architect. Having dealt with complicated human nature,MENG built an approach that can address normal people. He has embodied this down-to-earth humanism in many of his hospitals and schools. His capability of resolving sophisticated functional fows with simple means provides the necessities. His perseverance of decency of human space delivers the excellence.

MENG was one of the best students in South East University. In him we see the SEU tradition of persistence and delicacy. He possesses the skills of implanting a building with silence and eternity. He extends the line of heroism that has been with architecture since the very beginning. All through his career, he has made convincing monumental buildings. He uses simple forms in compelling interventions in different places. Proportion and scale, something that is painfully lacking in some contemporary architects, is in ample supply in MENG.
